Ground Hog Breakfast
Many, many years ago (long before I came to Snowflake) Uncle Gene (Grandpa Flake's older brother) started having biscuit and gravy "groundhog day breakfasts" on the ditch bank on "Back Street" (now Stinson St.) in the cold, dark hours of morning. He invited a few friends and relatives and it grew and grew to a huge breakfast. When Uncle Gene left to go on a mission the town took it over and served the breakfast at the town park.
Now the volunteer fire department and the town cook and serve the breakfast in the cafeteria on the first Saturday in February. It's absolutely free and consists of biscuits and gravy (either green chili or regular), has browns and ground hog (sausage).
When our kids were home we always got the kids up long before daylight so we could eat before starting our day's work. Now, I guess we don't have as much work because Gerald and I get up around 6:30 and join those who don't rise quite so early.
Today we enjoyed the company of town's people and family for the annual event. We saw Rex and his boys there, but the camera was in the car so Gerald didn't get a picture of them. He took this one picture and then our camera died, but this picture shows a few of the people that were there.
New Gym
After 51 years, Snowflake High School finally has a new gym and boy it's a nice one. These pictures are of the gym. If you look up around the top there's a fence and behind that fence is an indoor track - not regulation size - but a training trace. the blue duct work around the ceiling is the heating and air conditioning.
Because we had no gym we played all of our basketball games until the last 2 weeks and then we've had 5 home games in a row with one more tonight. Gerald and I have worked 5 hours a night at all of those games and we'll be glad when it's over.
The pictures were taken on Friday, February 3, with us playing Alchesay. For the 2nd time we packed the gym, which holds 1800 people. (The old gym holds 900.) We still use our old gym, playing 3 games in each gym each night we have home games.
The picture down the out-of-bounds line shows Gerald standing at the door, where it's his job to keep people under control and prevent them from bring food and beverages into the gym, which is a new concept in Snowflake. Rex "guards" the other set of doors. Their job isn't easy, but as people get used to the fact that we don't eat and drink in our gym, it's getting easier.
It's quite exciting and a dream come true for our entire area!

My Mother
I have been thinking lots about my mother lately. She's 87 years old and still going strong. About 3 years ago my sister, Denna, and I took her to Disneyland for a day. She walked every step of the way and enjoyed every minute.
Last year Gerald and I took her to Washington DC with us. We spent a couple of days with her sister, Donna Ruth and husband Bruce. We visited Colonial Williamsburg and she never missed a beat. We left her with Donna while we did some lobbying at the Capitol.
In 2004 the whole LeSueur tribe had Thanksgivng dinner at my brother Darrel's house. We rented a big slide for the kids entertainment. Grandma Nena, as she's fondly called, was a good sport and slide down with Kathy's mother, Bertie, and her sister. Here are pictures of them. Grandma Nena is on the left.
